Keeping pace with business and technology trends is a challenge today.  We will share how WOCCU is using advanced technology to “leap frog” over traditional credit union building steps in emerging countries, enabling credit unions to serve people previously unserved by financial institutions. PDAs become branch offices, POS systems turn corner shops into ATMs and software turns cell phones into cash in hand.  Learn from the experiences of credit unions in Latin America and Africa how to capitalize on technology to reduce expenses and perhaps reach new markets in your state.

Speaker: Steve Schaeffer is a Manager within the Technical Services Department for the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU).  In pursuit of its vision to improve people's lives through credit unions, the mission of World Council of Credit Unions is to be the world's leading advocate, platform, development agency and good governance model for credit unions.

In his travels throughout the world, Steve provides WOCCU field offices and credit unions with support on their information technology needs.  He is currently working on projects involved with establishing shared branching internationally, reaching rural credit union members through POS and mobile phone technology, networking rural credit unions in Africa and South America and creating the first credit union owned ATM network in Bolivia.

Prior to joining the World Council in 2003, Steve worked for CUNA Mutual Group and Metavante Corporation in information technology related fields.  Steve holds a Bachelors of Business Administration with a major in Management Information Systems from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.  He is fluent in both English and Spanish.  Steve and his wife, Jamie, have three children and reside in Madison, WI.
